Broad, balanced, differentiated & relevant curriculum
Gretton School is registered by the Department for Education (DfE) as a special school for pupils with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), specifically high functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. The full range of National Curriculum subjects for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 pupils is taught, leading to GCSE examinations. Pupils are also given the opportunity to gain nationally recognised vocational qualifications.
GCSE entry level certificates focusing on numeracy, literacy and ICT are available for pupils whose profile is less academic.
Following assessment and the careful development of each Individual Education Plan (IEP), the curriculum is continually adapted to reflect the changing needs of individual pupils as they continue to achieve. This ensures that each pupil is given the opportunity to reach their maximum potential.
Pupils are given the opportunity to study in local community colleges, with flexible support provided by Gretton School staff, should they have an interest in a particular subject or vocation.
There is a strong emphasis on a multi-professional approach to teaching and learning. The school uses a wide range of recognised ASD specific approaches to support learning including TEACCH and SPELL.
Pupils have access to a range of communication tools including Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Makaton.
Vocational curriculum & work based learning
At Gretton School, there is a strong emphasis on developing independent living skills and providing vocational opportunities for pupils aged 14-19. The vocational curriculum is tailored to individual needs and ambitions and includes access to qualifications.
Post 16 pupils are supported to identify and access courses at local colleges as well as work related learning placements within local organisations.
Participating in community life is an important part of the independence training programmes available at Gretton School, which is designed to support pupils’ future transition to less supported environments including semi independent and independent living.
