Curriculum Information

Maths
Algebraic reasoning and graph skills as well as financial and proportional problems. Followed by data handling, statistics, angles and polygons.
English
In English this term, learners will be studying a short story and extracts from Shakespeare's plays, in order to develop analytical skills in preparation for the GCSE course in year 10.
We will also be working towards and preparing for the functional skills English qualifications.
Science

Chemistry - how compounds are formed by ionic and covalent bonding, types of substances and the Periodic table.

Physics - Conservation of energy and energy resources, followed by waves, refraction and how we hear.

Biology - cells and how they divide, the brain and nervous system and how the eye works. The Genetics topic will also be started during this term.

Entry Level - Forces and movement, atoms, compounds, states of matter.
History
In History this term, we will start by finding out what life was like for people in Britain and Europe between the World Wars and the differences between a democracy and a dictatorship. After half term, we will be looking at the build up to the Second World War, the growth of fascism in Europe and the Nazi Party in Germany.
Geography
In Geography this term, we will start by looking at the topic of the Earth’s natural resources with a focus on global water stress, food insecurity and the use of energy. After half term, we will be looking at the topic of employment in the UK by investigating the rise and decline of manufacturing, the impact of globalisation and its impact on the high street.
RE
In RE this term, we will be exploring the topic of ethics, starting by looking at the meaning of ethics, morality and conscience. We will then investigate ethical questions linked to religion such as, the sanctity of life, environmental ethics, animal rights, drugs and religion, medical ethics and equality. We will also look at the major world religions and their attitudes to poverty and to the victims of natural disasters. Finally, the question of whether religion in the modern world is relevant and has a future, will be explored.
Careers
In careers this term learners will be introduced to the world of work, discussing topics such as pay, skills needed for work and what the working day looks like. After half term we will be focusing on life skills required to live independently.
PSHE
Spring 1- Growing and Changing- Different life stages and how our body develops mentally and physically.
Spring 2- Bullying, online safety and discrimination - Exploring how to spot, navigate and deal with bullying, racism, discrimination and maintaining online safety.
ICT (core)
We will be learning practical skills in querying databases alongside some theory surrounding them and a design / build task for a multi-table database.
PE
Spring 1- Health related fitness (vertical jump test, 30 metre sprint, reaction time, illinois agility test)
Spring 2- Net & Racket (badminton, tennis, hockey, lacrosse & volleyball)
Option Subjects
BTEC Sport
Spring 1- Exploring sports leadership, what makes success and evidencing success. Developing our own leadership skills through delivery of chosen sport and review.
Spring 2- Training for personal fitness, creating a diverse gym programme, completing safely and reviewing strengths and areas of improvement and knowledge of the cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems.
ICT
After a review of Google Slides and Google Sheets (documents, presentations, inserting videos and images), we will move onto the computer hardware, covering CPU, ROM and RAM.
Food Technology
Learners will be making a mixture of sweet and savoury dishes that they will be able to complete on their own.
Computer Science
Alongside a case study on the appropriate use of AI, we will predominantly continue to learn Python. We will focus on learning to use functions and external libraries.

Art
Bronze Arts Award part C (research unit).
Bronze Arts Award part D (skill share /teaching unit). Learners will take it in turns to deliver and take part in each other's sessions.
History GCSE
In History this term, we will be looking at crime, punishment and law enforcement in England in the 18th and 19th centuries. We will begin by looking at the changing definitions of crime, such as the increase in highway robbery and the case of the Tolpuddle martyrs. We will also explore changing attitudes towards punishment by investigating the decline in the use of the death penalty and transportation to Australia. As a case study, learners will also find out about Pentonville Prison and the penal reforms of Robert Peel before finding out about the Bow Street Runners and the creation of the Metropolitan Police. After half term, we will start to look at how the Metropolitan Police had problems policing the streets of Whitechapel in the East End of London between c.1870 and c.1900 and how investigative methods changed as a result of the failure to identify or apprehend Jack the Ripper in 1888.
