Year 7 - Autumn Term
Curriculum Information for Year 7
English (Ms McGhee, Mr Sullivan and Mr Battesby):
In Year 7 this term, learners began with a baseline assessment before exploring creative writing through a unit on fairy tales, learning how to structure stories using Todorov’s theory of equilibrium and Propp’s character roles. They are also studying non-fiction texts linked to modern beliefs in myths and legends, developing comprehension, analysis and annotation skills.
After half term, the focus moves to poetry inspired by myths and folklore. Learners will explore forms such as ballads, sonnets, dramatic monologues and free verse; practising techniques including simile, metaphor and personification. Using the S.M.I.L.E. mnemonic to support analysis, they will create both analytical and creative responses. Alongside this, learners will continue the Star Reader programme, weekly SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and handwriting lessons to strengthen fluency and core literacy skills.

Maths:
In Year 7, during the first half of the autumn term, learners will revisit number and algebra foundations from Year 6 while extending these into Key Stage 3. They will explore sequences, algebraic thinking and the use of algebraic notation, alongside developing an understanding of equality and equivalence when working with expressions. Learners will also consolidate their knowledge of place value for integers and decimals, strengthen their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages and practise making connections and equivalences between them
Science:
This term, Chemistry lessons will focus on mixtures and separation, while Physics will cover the topic of energy. In Biology, learners will study cells, tissues, organs and organ systems, concluding with a unit on muscles and bones.
PSHE:
Within PSHE this term, we will be learning about different types of relationships, including families, friendships as well as intimate relationships, focusing on building positive, respectful connections. Key themes will also include communication, boundaries, consent, managing conflict and recognising unhealthy relationships. Later on in the term, we will be focusing on the ‘living in the wider’ world strand of PSHE. This unit will focus on the importance of self esteem in achieving personal goals.
ICT:
This term, learners will be introduced to spreadsheets and how to use them effectively. They will learn how to carry out calculations using formulas, work with different types of data and use tools such as sums, averages, and conditional formatting to organise and present information clearly. These skills will help them build confidence in handling data, both for schoolwork and in everyday life.
History:
In History this term, we will start by finding out about migration to Britain from the Stone Age to the arrival of Anglo-Saxon invaders. After half term, we will be looking at the events of 1066 and the Norman conquest of England.
Geography:
In Geography this term, we will start by looking at why it is important to study geography and learn about how mapping the Earth has changed over time. We will also learn how to use Ordnance Survey maps, world maps and latitude and longitude. After half term, we will be finding out about the physical and human geography of the United Kingdom.
RE:
In RE this term, we will be comparing and finding connections between the major world religions. After half term, we will be looking at the key beliefs of Christianity, the life of Jesus and the celebration of Christmas.

CDM (Creative Digital Media):
Learners will start their CDM year with an introduction to Google Slides as they create simple posters combining text and images. Some students will develop these skills further by using Canva and Photoshop. They will use these skills later in the year when they take their own photographs and use these images to create a product, such as a Wanted poster or a movie poster.
Art:
Learners are currently producing a comic book style portrait in the style of the pop artist Roy Litchenstein. They are using bold primary colours, Ben Day dots and black outlines. Once these are complete they will look at how to draw realistic features, applying tone and plenty of detail. They will then create an expressionistic style WANTED poster, adding a cowboy hat and the Wanted and Reward signs. Towards the end of the autumn term learners will create Christmas crafts.
Music:
This half term in music, learners will be recapping some basic skills we learnt in primary lessons. We will revisit our note values and note names and then extend this learning by understanding dotted notes and how they can add colour and character to our composition and performing work. After half term, we will be looking at structure in musical composition. We will consider how classical structures and more popular structures such as verse and chorus can be enhanced with instrumental sections and middle 8s. We will be exploring this through listening, performing and composition tasks.

Drama:
This term, learners will become familiar with the set up and expectations of drama. They will understand some basic subject specific vocabulary as well as developing their understanding of the genre of pantomime. We will explore key features (such as stock characters, audience participation, comedy, music, and spectacle) and some will contribute to the Christmas production of The Wizard of Oz through a chosen role. This may include performing on stage, supporting backstage (props, set, costumes, technical), or taking part in organisational tasks (publicity, programme design, front of house). Through this process, learners will gain experience of teamwork, communication and creativity while working towards a shared performance outcome.
Forest School:
This term in Forest School, we will be helping to care for the site by undertaking jobs such as weeding paths, laying bark and making log piles for the newts to overwinter in. When we have something to celebrate, such as a learner’s birthday, we will also be learning to make campfires and using the fire to cook snacks.

Food technology:
The focus for Year 7 this term is to develop independence in the kitchen by learning a range of basic dishes that they can prepare confidently without support. Learners will build on skills already introduced, moving from using ready-made items such as pastry to creating their own. They will also develop new techniques, including making dough and understanding the process of how dough rises.
Design Technology:
Year 7 are focusing on making a small doll inspired by the book and film Ugly Dolls, focusing on the design technology principles of designing, making and evaluating.
PE: (Mr. Lee and Mr. Green)
In P.E, learners will take part in various different sporting activities including invasion sports, net and racket, target sports, athletics and health related fitness. In Year 7 learners will develop games for understanding this will be showing their understanding of rules and regulations. In addition to this learners will begin working on working as a team to creatively overcome opposition.
