More than just results: celebrating our learners on GCSE Results Day

GCSE Results Day is always a special day at Gretton, but this year there was something particularly lovely about seeing our learners, families and staff come together to celebrate.

Of course, there were results to open, and plenty of proud smiles. But, as always at Gretton, it was the moments in-between that really stayed with us.

One of our favourite moments came when one learner, sporting quite a large smile, turned to a member of staff and very honestly declared after seeing his results: “I don’t hate you, but I still don’t like you.” Cue plenty of laughter between the learner, Mr Battersby and Miss Wilson. It was such a wonderfully Gretton moment - a little bit cheeky, completely genuine and a lovely reminder of the relationships our learners build with the adults around them.

And then there was a trio of learners who, having collected their results, decided they weren't quite ready to leave. Instead, they wanted to stay on site and “explore the school.” We’re not entirely sure what they had planned for their afternoon, but it did make us smile to see that, even after receiving their GCSE results, they still weren't quite ready to leave Gretton. We like to think they just can't get enough of us...

These little moments might not appear on a results sheet, but they are a huge part of what makes days like this so meaningful.

Every learner at Gretton has their own starting point, strengths and challenges. For many, reaching the point of sitting formal exams may once have felt out of reach. As Mrs Elkins said, “today was an opportunity to recognise just how awesome our learners are - and how much they are capable of achieving.” But what makes us the most proud isn't simply the grades. It's seeing a learner who once struggled to imagine sitting an exam proudly opening their results. It's watching young people develop friendships, confidence and independence. It's seeing them learn to advocate for themselves and begin to imagine what their futures might look like."

Results Day is about more than celebrating achievement; it’s about recognising the relationships, resilience and personal growth behind those achievements. We are incredibly proud of every learner and the progress they have made from their own individual starting point. It was also wonderful to see how proud they were of themselves, as so many chose to stay, chat, laugh and spend time with the people who have supported them along the way - even when they had technically finished for the day!

To all of our learners: we are so proud of you.

And to our parents and carers: thank you for sharing these journeys with us. We feel incredibly lucky to be part of them.
