Curriculum Information

Shetland class:

English
In our English lessons during the summer term, Shetland will continue to work on our new Sounds-Write program. The learners are enjoying this and deepening their understanding of phonics. We will also work on adjectives, nouns and verbs. For our writing and reading we are learning about adventure stories which links well with our magical mapping topic.

Maths
Within the summer term Shetland are learning about shapes, angles, centimeters and millimetres, negative numbers and decimals. Learners will explore different types of angles, learn how to draw them and explore the size of decimals.

Science
Within Science, learners are continuing to build on their knowledge of animals, including humans. We are learning about gestation periods for a range of animals and then will move on to learning about circulation and health. We will finish our Science learning with an investigation question: Are some sunglasses safer than others?

Topic
This half term Shetland will be learning about mapping. This we will link into our adventure stories unit in English. By the end of the unit learners will be able to explain how to use a compass, use coordinates and create their own simple maps. During the second half of summer term we will focus on our changing world which will link well to mapping.

RE
Within Religious Education learners are learning about the different creation stories from Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam and comparing the stories for similarities and differences.

PSHE
During the summer term, Shetland will first focus on healthy choices and will look in depth at healthy habits, sleep hygiene, sun safety and first aid. During the second half of the summer term, we will move onto examining respect, friendships and peer pressure.

Computing

This term, Shetland will continue to explore developing their own games.

Thunberg class:

English

In English this half term, we are looking at adventure stories. Initially this will be how to plan the story before writing it with a story mountain. We will look at scene setting, a problem and a resolution as well as other elements of punctuation and grammar and story writing.

Maths

This half term in maths, learners will be exploring decimals, fractions, and percentages. They will begin by deepening their understanding of decimals up to two decimal places and learn how they relate to fractions, including tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. Learners will practise comparing, ordering, and rounding decimals, and will also develop their understanding of percentages and how they connect to both fractions and decimals. This will help build a strong foundation in number and place value, as well as fluency in recognising equivalences across these key areas.

Science

This half term in science, learners will be building on their knowledge of contact and non-contact forces by exploring gravity, air resistance, water resistance, and friction in more depth. They will investigate how these forces can be unbalanced and the effects this has on movement. Learners will plan and carry out practical investigations, analyse data, and develop their scientific enquiry skills.

Topic

This half term in topic, learners will be developing their understanding of Roman Britain. They will explore why the Romans built well-planned towns and an effective road network, and consider how these helped the Roman Empire succeed. Learners will investigate different viewpoints about key events such as Boudicca’s Rebellion and use a range of primary and secondary sources to ask and answer historical questions. They will also research aspects of Roman daily life and reflect on the lasting impact the Romans had on Britain, including what evidence of Roman influence remains today.

This half term in RE, learners will be exploring the key beliefs and practices of Buddhism. They will learn about important concepts such as karma and the cycle of samsara, and explore how meditation is used as part of Buddhist practice. Learners will also discover key Buddhist festivals and understand the role of temples in worship. Throughout the unit, they will reflect on how these beliefs and practices influence the daily lives of Buddhist followers.

Pilgrim class:

English
This half term we are reading Around the World in 80 Days and using comprehension questions to develop our reading skills. We will also be reading classic extracts like Treasure Island and Black Beauty to develop the use of a wide range of vocabulary as well as developing our inference skills.

Maths
In maths, we are focusing on place value, rounding and number skills. We will also revisit arithmetic, reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Science
Our science topic is Animals Including Humans: Circulation and Health. We will learn about the human circulatory system, including the heart and blood, and explore how exercise and lifestyle affect our health.

Topic (Geography)

We are exploring the world using maps and globes. We will learn about the Equator, climate zones, and compare different regions like the UK, the Tropics, and the Polar Regions.

RE
This half term we are exploring different beliefs about how the world was created. We will compare the Christian and Hindu creation stories and learn about scientific theories like the Big Bang.

PSHE
Our PSHE focus is on Healthy Lifestyles and Relationships. We will learn about the changes that happen during puberty, talk about emotions, and discuss safe and respectful friendships, including learning about alcohol and drugs in a safe, age-appropriate way.

Computing
In Computing, we are designing and coding our own text adventure games using Purple Mash. We will learn to plan branching stories, use basic coding logic, and test our games to make them fun and interactive.

Upland class:

English
This term, we will focus on using punctuation (full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, and question marks) and pronouns (‘I’ and ‘me’), along with writing and structuring paragraphs. We’ll also begin our new whole-school spelling programme, Sounds-Write, covering codes and polysyllabic spellings. In writing, we’ll link to Around the World in 80 Days, predicting places Phileas Fogg visits, describing characters and settings, and writing diary entries from a character’s perspective. Next term, we will explore significant authors. Within this unit of work, we will focus on developing paragraphing skills and punctuation use in sentences for grammar and punctuation.

Maths
This term, we are focusing on multiplication and division. We will be learning our 3, 6 and 9 times tables and using them to solve problems. We will also practise dividing by these numbers and understanding the patterns between them. We will spend time working on recalling these facts quickly and use them in different ways. Next half term, we’ll be moving on to fractions, decimals and percentages, building on what learners already know to help them make connections between these concepts.

Science
This term, we are learning about the circulatory system. We are exploring the location and function of the heart, different types of blood and blood vessels, and the role they play in the body. We will also group foods by nutritional value and learn which nutrients help keep the heart healthy. Next half term, we will focus on sun safety, testing how well different sunglasses block light and UV rays. We will present our findings through presentations and adverts.

Topic
This term, we are learning about global geography—exploring the Equator, hemispheres, latitude and longitude, and comparing climates and features of the polar regions, tropics, and the UK. We are also learning about time zones and how to find world times. Next term, we will study Ancient Greece, including key events, daily life, beliefs, and comparing Athens and Sparta. We'll also explore the Trojan War and Ancient Greek Olympics through primary sources.

RE
This term, we are exploring an introduction to Hinduism, focusing on key beliefs and deities. Next term, we are learning about religious journeys, comparing pilgrimage practices in Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. Through this, we will develop a basic understanding of Hindu beliefs and examine similarities and differences across the three faiths.

PSHE
This term, we are learning about respectful relationships, personal boundaries, and attraction. We will explore bullying, why it happens, how to stop it, and how to support friends. We will also cover personal space, unwanted contact, and the importance of consent. We’ll discuss different types of attraction and how they vary, and begin learning about human reproduction. Next term, we'll explore different attitudes towards money, ways to earn a living, and how to stay safe from risks in both familiar and unfamiliar environments. Finally, we’ll look at the challenges of moving to a new class and how to face them with confidence.

Computing
This term, we’ll create a picture-based quiz, explore question types in 2Quiz, and develop surveys and questionnaires to gather information. Next term, we’ll learn about algorithms, create computer programs, explore collision detection, and design programs with timed sequences and button functions.

Messi class:

English

This term in English, we will continue enjoying The BFG as a class novel. Children will explore the characters and themes through a variety of writing tasks, including diary entries and film reviews, helping them to build their descriptive writing skills.

Maths

We are revisiting number and measurement to deepen our understanding of fractions and decimals, especially focusing on tenths and hundredths. This will support learners in developing strong foundations for future mathematical learning.

Science

In Science, we are exploring the fascinating world of animals, learning how to classify them and understand the different habitats they live in.

Topic

In Topic, our focus is the geography of the United Kingdom. We will be identifying cities, counties, rivers, seas, hills, and mountains, while also discussing how population changes can affect communities and the way people live.

In RE, we will be exploring different beliefs about how the world was created by looking at stories from Hinduism and Christianity, alongside scientific theories. This will encourage respectful discussion and critical thinking.

PSHE

In PSHE, we are continuing to learn about relationships, with a focus on positive friendships, honesty, trust, online communication, and how to respond to peer pressure and challenges.

Computing

In computing, children will learn about the parts that make up a computer and how they work together. They will also begin using the Logo programming language to create patterns and shapes, helping them to understand basic coding principles.

Art

Learners will be creating zentangle-style kite designs and making kites to fly during our summer term Arts Festival. They will also create mythological creature puppets on sticks with split pins to move the limbs.

Primary classes are looking to develop their understanding of transferable skills in athletics. We are also working on the Olympic values such as teamwork, resilience, and friendship.

Music

Primary classes have participated in two half terms of music lessons this year. During the second half term, we will be looking at Instruments of the Orchestra, considering the different families, how they make sound, what they sound like and having a go at playing many of them.

Forest School

Primary classes will be identifying bugs, building dens, learning to use fire strikers and taking part in campfire cooking sessions. We will also be looking at wildflowers and doing some pond dipping.

Brent class:

English
This term, we will be focusing on our punctuation and grammar. Last term, we focused on sentence structure and this term we will be extending our writing using more complex sentences. We will also be focusing on handwriting and the presentation of our work. We are reading and watching the book and film ‘Around The World In Eighty Days’ and we will be looking at the different settings and characters.

Maths
We will be looking at multiplication and division with a focus on times tables to help with the recall of multiplication facts. After half term, we will be revisiting addition and subtraction.

Science
This term, we are learning about the circulatory system. We are exploring the location and function of the heart, different types of blood and blood vessels, and the role they play in the body.

This term, we are looking at the extreme world. We will learn about the Equator, the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and Poles and will use latitude and longitude coordinates to find places in the world.

PSHE

This term, we are learning about the changes that happen during puberty in both boys and girls and after half term, we will be learning about alcohol and drugs in a safe, age-appropriate way.

Computing

In Computing, we are looking at how to design and code our own text adventure games using Purple Mash. We will learn to plan branching stories, use basic coding logic, and use our classmates to test and play our games.
