Year 11 - Autumn Term
Curriculum Information for Year 11
Note: If you are not sure who your learner's teacher is for certain subjects or what option subjects your learner is studying then please contact your learner's form tutor for more information.
Year 11/12 English Language (Teachers: Mrs Margarita, Miss McGhee, Mr Sullivan):
Learners will continue their coursework for the Cambridge IGCSE. They will further refine their descriptive writing abilities with new scenes and scenarios. Narrative writing will also be a key focus, with tasks inspired by different images to enhance their storytelling skills. Preparation for Language Paper 1 will continue, with an emphasis on honing analytical and comprehension abilities.

Maths (Daniel Stephen):
This term focuses on deepening algebraic skills, including solving quadratic and simultaneous equations, working with functions, and exploring more complex graph work. Learners also revisit trigonometry, applying it to both 2D and 3D problems, and study advanced geometry, including circle theorems and transformations. Probability and statistics are further developed, with an emphasis on probability trees, Venn diagrams, and interpreting data sets through a variety of statistical measures and diagrams. The curriculum ensures learners are well-prepared for their exams, with a focus on problem-solving, reasoning, and exam-style questions.

PE (Mr Green and Mr Lee):
This term, learners will build their knowledge around invasion sports. They will be taking part in basketball, football, netball, benchball and handball. Within these sessions learners will develop their fundamental skills such as passing, moving, tactical awareness, shooting and throwing. These skills will be shown through tailored drills and match play with the aim of learners using these different skills and tactics to outwit their opponents.
PSHE (Mr Watkins):
The focus in PSHE this term is centred around perseverance, taking positive risks, looking ahead to college/6th form/University applications and interviews, along with our digital footprint and how to effectively revise.

Option Subjects.
Chemistry GCSE (Mrs McCran, Dr Allouis):
This term we will be looking at the groups of the periodic table and what that can tell us about the behaviour of the elements within them. We will experiment quite intensively on the rates of reactions and consider the heat energy changes involved in the reactions. This leads us into the study of fuels and hydrocarbons and the effect on the Earth and the atmosphere.

Physics GCSE (Mrs McCran):
This term we will consider forces at work and how forces affect other objects surrounding them. Following on we will have an in depth look at electricity, charge, energy transferred and resistance. This leads into magnetism and how it can be used to create motors and an induction effect.

Biology GCSE (Mr Doza, Dr Allouis):
This term, the topic of animal coordination, control and homeostasis is covered. This includes the areas of hormones and hormone cycle as well as the regulation of the internal environment of the body with consideration to sugar and thermal levels. Lastly, we will learn about how the kidney functions.

Entry Level Further Science (Mr Doza):
This term, we are discovering ‘Health and Disease’ and investigating how to separate mixtures. Finally we will experiment with waves and radiation.

Design Technology (Mrs Beck): Product design - This term, learners can add to or improve the card game UNO, or design and make their own card games. Learners are introduced to the interactive design cycle, design terms and technical drawing skills, who users are and the importance of user experience. Learners investigate the design brief fully before embarking on creating their design. Some learners will begin an NCFE in either construction or textiles.

Computer Science
The learners are advanced in their coding skills. Those who began the course in year 9 have now completed all the requirements of this. Learners are predominantly using these skills now in partially self directed skills development to embed through practice. There is an amount of theory work left to complete; this term we will look at networks, searching and sorting, and system security.

BTEC Music (Mrs Beardmore):
The learners are working at different stages of the BTEC Music course.
One learner is aiming to be finished by Christmas with just one unit (sequencing) left to complete. This will allow time for other GCSE subjects to be completed and revised for the summer exam series.
One learner is finishing the BTEC Music First Award and will add on additional units in order to gain a BTEC First Certificate in Music this year (two BTEC qualifications). These extra units include a listening exam, further solo performance and some music theory.
Art (Mrs Easton):
This term the learners will be developing their perspective drawing skills. They will learn how to draw a perspective room adding furniture and details of their choice but learning about the principals of lines leading to the vanishing point. Once their design is done they will then convert this into a 3D box and create miniature models of the furniture etc.
History GCSE (Mr Miller):
In History this term, we will start by looking at how Hitler and the Nazis seized power in 1933, created a dictatorship and maintained control and influenced attitudes by creating a police state. We will also examine opposition, resistance and conformity to the new regime. After half term, we will examine life in Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1939, particularly looking at Nazi policies towards women, the young, the economy and minority groups.

Food Technology (Mrs Jordan):
This half term we will concentrate on making basic dishes including; jam tarts, sausage rolls, meatballs and spaghetti, pizza and muffins. The learners are having the choice of which meals to cook and we will be having a ‘come dine with me’ lesson to showcase their work. Learners are working independently and are following recipes, locating equipment and food.
