Curriculum Information for Year 10

English:
Teachers: GCSE class - Mrs Margarita & Mr Sullivan
This term, learners will be revising for their upcoming GCSE examinations. They will hone grammar and punctuation skills to improve upon the structure of their written work and revisit the format of the various forms of writing. In addition, they will examine the style and content of the more complex questions in the GCSE, as well as completing some past papers.

After the exam, learners will have the opportunity to study English Literature. They will read the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ and discuss the social, historical context, themes and characters. This will allow learners to deepen their analytical skills before beginning the course in the following year.

Functional Skills
Teacher: Mr Battersby
This term, learners will develop their ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured descriptions, demonstrating an understanding of the target audience and purpose. Learners will learn to use a variety of language devices and techniques to enhance their writing, using metaphor, simile, personification and onomatopoeia

Maths
Teacher: Mr Stephen
This term we will be looking at probability, and how it is used to predict outcomes. This will be followed by collecting, representing and interpreting data. In the latter part of term we will focus on sequences followed by the use of roots and indices.

PSHE
Teacher: Mr Watkins
During the Summer 1 term, learners will be focusing on topics from the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) strand of PSHE, which primarily looks at LGBTQ focus, parenting styles, and community cohesion. In Summer 2, learners will also look at areas from the Health and Wellbeing selection, that includes the negative impact of alcohol, piercing and tattoos and hate crimes as well as how we can all improve our carbon footprint.

PE
Teacher: Mr Lee and Mr Green
Learners will be undertaking an introduction into athletics and will be learning different techniques across throws, jumps, sprints and long distance running. They will demonstrate the chin knee toe, fosbury flop, sprint start and learn how to pace. Alongside this learners will demonstrate the olympic values including teamwork, perseverance and inclusivity.
Careers
Learners will engage in conversations around adulthood and independent living, including conversations on household tasks and responsibilities, maintaining friendships into adulthood and other learner-led topics. Each learner will give their own point of view to show their understanding of each topic.

Option Subjects
Biology GCSE
Teacher: Mrs Chagger
This term we will be looking at plant structure and function, how plants move food and water around from root to leaves, the process of photosynthesis and its limiting factors and how plant cells are adapted for their function. There will be some time for revising for the mock exams in late June.

Chemistry GCSE
Teachers: Mrs McCran, Dr Allouis
We start the term with electrolytic processes and obtaining metals from ores. Reversible reactions and a look at the transition metals of the periodic table complete the term. Mock exams are in late June and a brief look at exam technique will be included.

Physics GCSE
Teacher: Dr Allouis
The term starts off with astronomy and a look into the Solar system and the life cycle of stars, this is followed by forces and doing work and the effect forces have on each other. Mock exams are in late June and a brief look at exam technique will be included.

Entry Level Science
Teacher: Mr Doza
This term finishes off the Entry Level Certificate with the physics topic of waves and radiation. We will then move onto learning some GCSE Biology topics such as cells, specialisation and enzyme activity and food tests as well as the transport of molecules through cells.
BTEC Creative Digital Media
Teacher: Mr Rowntree
Learners will be working towards their Tentlee tea advertisement as part of their Moving Image unit and will be preparing for their mock exams at the end of the summer term.

Drama
Teacher: Mrs Khairdean
Learners will begin working on their last LAMDA level 2 exam (GRADE 5 Acting). They will have the option to be entered for the exam scheduled for the weekend 5/6th July.

History GCSE
Teacher: Mr Miller
In History this term, we will be continuing our topic on ‘Superpower relations and the Cold War’ and begin by finding out about the Cold War crisis that led to the building of the Berlin Wall, the 1962 Cuban Missile crisis and the events in Czechoslovakia in 1968. We will then look at attempts to reduce the likelihood of nuclear conflict and how flashpoints like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan ended this period of détente. Finally, we will look at the collapse of Soviet control in Eastern Europe and the end of the Cold War. We will finish off by revising topics for the end of year mock exams.

Computer Science GCSE
Teacher: Mr Arnold
We will spend time studying the range of system software, to categorise and explain what these do. We will spend some time refreshing our Python skills, or for those who are further advanced we will launch some larger projects using formal planning techniques.

Design Technology
Teacher: Mrs Beck
Learners are working with a variety of techniques such as spoon carving, sculptures/figurines out of clay and Fimo as well as simple electronics to support their future design ideas for their NCFE Level 1.
​
BTEC Sport
Teacher: Mr Lee
We will be working on unit 1 this term which includes examination preparation and researching eight mark questions around musculoskeletal system, date interpretation, normative date, fitness testing, methods of training and components of fitness.
​
Art
Teacher: Mrs Easton
Learners are all working on either completing their unit 2 for their Silver Arts Award (the leadership unit) or if this is now complete then they are resuming their own chosen practical projects for unit 1 part A.

Food Technology
Teacher: Mr Langsdon
Learners will make a variety of different sweet and savory dishes to build upon the skills they have learnt this year so far. Each week the food made will be evaluated and different food hygiene topics will be covered.
​
Psychology
Teacher: Dr Allouis
This term we are learning about Social Influences on our behaviour including how sociocultural and personality factors affect our conformity and obedience, and how prosocial and antisocial behaviour in crowds are influenced by culture, personality and morality. Mock exams are in late June and a brief look at exam technique will be included.
