Year 7

Curriculum Information for Year 7

English
During the summer term, Year 7 learners will explore and analyse poetry from diverse cultural backgrounds, including works by John Agard, Benjamin Zephaniah and Imtiaz Dharker. In the latter part of the term, we will introduce Shakespeare, further developing analytical skills, with a focus on selected scenes from 'The Tempest'. This will build a strong foundation for Year 8 and their future studies, preparing them well for GCSE Literature.

Maths
In the first half of the Summer term, Year 7 pupils will develop their understanding of geometry and measures, focusing on angles, area, and symmetry. These topics build spatial awareness and lay the groundwork for more complex geometric reasoning in later years. The second half of the term introduces probability and statistics, helping learners interpret and represent data effectively.

Science
In Science this term we will investigate topics in biology, chemistry and physics. We will be learning about sound and ecosystems in biology, with the change in weather this is the perfect time of year to get out and about. Chemistry will see us experimenting with atoms, elements and compounds, while the topic forces will be covered within physics.

PSHE

This term we will explore the effects of puberty on our bodies and emotions. Our first lesson explores the physical changes we go through (both for boys and girls), understanding the normalcy of these changes and becoming more aware of the challenges ahead. Later lessons will focus on the emotional and social challenges learners will undergo during puberty, as well as the different ways we can improve our hygiene and social lives.

History

In History this term, we will start by looking at the conflict between the Crown and the Church in the Middle Ages and how England’s Parliament developed before we examine the impact of the Black Death and the Peasants Revolt of 1381. After half term, we will be continuing our thematic study of migration to Britain by examining the major groups of migrants from the Middle Ages to the present day and how the modern UK is a diverse, multi-cultural society because of these new arrivals.

RE

This term, we shall start looking at the second largest religion in the world, Islam. We begin by exploring the basic tenets of Islam, the three ideas of Tawhid, Risalah and Akhirah, the Five Pillars of Islam and the different activities Muslims take part in on a daily basis. Further lessons explore the concepts of Jihad, the Mosque and the importance of the Qu’ran in Islamic teachings.

CDM (Creative Digital Media)

Learners will complete their stop-motion animation projects and progress on to video recording and editing to create a short video product. This will incorporate some of the audio skills gained previously. They will end the academic year with a media project of their choice using some of the skills gained this year.

Art

The vast majority of learners are continuing with their lantern project. When that is finished they will be designing and making a kite to be flown during the Arts Festival later in the summer.

Music

This half term, we will be studying the four main types of Jazz music, following on from our work on Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll. We will consider the historical climate which forms each type of Jazz and listen and play an example of each. After half term, we will be time travelling right back to Medieval times to look at music in each period in time. Starting with Medieval music, we will learn about Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern music through listening and practical tasks, understanding about how instruments and musical styles have developed.

Forest School

This term, learners will learn how to build fires from scratch, use knives to whittle wood and take part in campfire cooking sessions. We will also be looking at identifying bugs and plants.

Food technology
During this term learners will be making various sweet and savoury dishes that they will be able to make again at home with limited help and support. Each week the food made will be evaluated by the learners.

Design Technology

This term, learners will learn about 3D printing and design and manufacture their own 3D design.

PE

Learners will be undertaking an introduction into athletics, where they will learn different techniques across throws, jumps, sprints and long distance running. They will demonstrate the chin knee toe, fosbury flop, sprint start and learn how to pace. Alongside this learners will demonstrate the olympic values including teamwork, perseverance and inclusivity.
